YES provides these resources to youth experiencing homelessness through trauma-informed support, develops leadership and employment readiness of youth and partners with youth to advocate for systems of change.

Hours: Full-time - Mon-Fri (6am-2pm)

Day to Day

The Resident Specialist is responsible for maintaining the efficient operation of residential facilities and supervising youth activities at YES Emergency Shelter.

Responsibilities:

  • Implementing YES residential program policies and procedures, which are designed to provide management, guidance, and redirection for the youth residents in the residential facilities.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and positive working relationships.
  • Supervising all youth activities; meal preparation, group, dining activities, chore routines, sleeping and recreational activities.
  • Completing thorough documentation on all youth or youth contacts, reporting any significant problems or activities that require the attention of, or investigation of, a MGH Lead, Program Manager or Director of Operations.
  • Documenting in youth resident files all significant activities, appointments and contacts including reports of individual, group or family discussions
  • Participating in all scheduled YES staff meetings, case management reviews, training sessions, and meetings with YES program consultants as directed.
  • Participation in the case management and therapeutic service programs for residential and non-residential youth in the program and their families, including individual, group and/or family discussion sessions.
  • Assisting in the administration of a youth’s case load and the development of a service or case plan for each youth and family receiving residential services or as directed by supervisory staff.
  • Conducting individual, group and/or family discussion sessions with youth residents and families
  • Documenting all crisis and informational phone calls, including preparation of a supplemental written report if indicated by the situation.
  • Completion of Discharge Summaries for all youth participating in residential programs.
  • Conducting, or assisting with, follow-up activities on all youth and families.
  • General supervision of student interns as directed by supervisory staff.
  • Remaining awake, alert and properly supervising all youth while on duty.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisory staff.

Skills/Competencies/Requirements:

  • Twenty-one years of age.
  • Knowledge and application of basic youth-care principles in a residential environment.
  • Knowledge and application of therapeutic techniques in a residential environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with youth and their families, other staff, professionals and law enforcement agencies
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license, current auto insurance, and ability to transport program youth as needed.
  • Willingness to work evenings, and holidays as needed or requested.
  • Ability to complete minor to moderate lifting.
  • Completion of thorough criminal history and background investigation.

Education:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Associate degree in psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, or counseling is preferred or two year of related experience in youth shelter programming.
